How we got started?

When you visit a classroom with over 50 1st graders who come to school…

…even if there is a gaping hole in the classroom ceiling and they may get wet if it rains

…even if they share books that are in tatters with 2 other students

…even if they do not have a pencil in hand or paper to write on…

when you see children wave and smile even if they are hungry…

when teachers, who are paid $70/month, come out of pocket for student fees and school supplies…

when parents, despite their poverty, donate their money and time to build pre-schooler’s a classroom

...you know, as we knew, it was time to lend a helping hand.  Even if we started with something small that it could make a big difference in Sibariwan.

The Sibariwan students, teachers and parents showed us an amazing example of community collaboration, initiative and desire to create a better future.  Seeing how Sibariwanons come together and support each other initially drew us to them and they continue to teach us about what is the best in all of us.

And so in December 2008, we formed ARK and invited our family, friends, and friends’ friends to join in the effort of making a difference in the education of children in rural communities in developing countries.
